Modern on a Budget

Glen Burnie, MD

Creative problem-solving built this house on a tight budget and even tighter site to meet the disparate needs of its owners. He wanted large walls to display art; she wanted lots of windows looking at the water and an open plan. A three-story home was the answer. An open living area with 20’ ceilings provides room for art on two walls and two walls of large windows. Unique approaches to common materials — using the largest format conventional windows in unconventional groupings, for example — kept the project on budget, as did the use of concrete board to clad the exterior. Painted rich hues of blue, the cladding completes this modern waterfront home.
